Calculating Fluids for Pediatric Patients @ HCMC

Hello Everyone!

There are many different methods/calculations physicians use to  determine what is the best rate of fluids for patients.  I often have wondered, “Why is this fluid running at 60mL/hr and does it make sense for this patient?”  In speaking with Dr. Kiragu, he agreed that the attached 4-2-1 Rule is a great way to verify that our patients fluids are running at an appropriate rate.

This information is not only valuable to those of you that are new to Pediatrics, but to each of us as we think critically and verify that maintenance fluid orders are placed correctly.  (This is also why the admission weights are pivotal to the medical team!).

The 4-2-1 Rule is attached.  It is also posted in the med rooms for your reference.
